Moving from Los Angeles to Phoenix: What the Summer Really Costs You

Phoenix is about six hours from LA, but summer heat, power bills and water supply change the math. Check these first before you commit to a move.

Is moving from Los Angeles to Phoenix worth it?

It can be, especially if you want to stay a day’s drive from family in Southern California and want a larger home for the money. Summer is the cost people underestimate. Heat drives up electric bills, limits when you are outdoors, and affects your home’s cooling and pool costs. Visit in July or August before you commit, and run your own budget with real quotes.

The housing picture

Housing is usually cheaper than Los Angeles, but the gap has narrowed in recent years. Compare the same type of home, not a metro average. A newer single-family home in the east or west valley is not comparable to an LA condo, and the commute, lot size and HOA rules change the real cost.

Ask for the full picture on any home: HOA dues, special district charges in newer subdivisions, insurance quotes and twelve months of utility bills. For anything involving taxes, ask your CPA.

Heat, power bills, and water

Phoenix summers are long. Many days run above 100 degrees from late spring through early fall, and July afternoons often pass 110. People who live there describe it as a lifestyle with two halves: outdoor life from roughly mid-fall through spring, and indoor life in the heat. If you love hiking, golf, or evenings outdoors, the cooler months are excellent. Others find the summer wears them down.

Ask for specifics before you buy or sign a lease:

Schools, the drive back to LA, and how to test the move

Arizona allows families to apply to schools outside their home district when space is available, so a district boundary is not the only factor. School assignment and capacity still vary by address and by school, so verify enrollment rules directly with each school or district for the homes you are considering. Our school research guide shows how to check any state.

Phoenix is roughly 370 miles from Los Angeles, about a six-hour drive without heavy traffic. That is close enough for family visits in a way Tennessee or the Carolinas never will be. If staying close to LA matters to you, compare Phoenix with Las Vegas using our side-by-side tool.

Rent first if you can. Spend a few weeks there in summer, drive your likely commute, and pay a full utility cycle before you buy. Read the Phoenix guide and our Arizona state page for neighborhood questions to verify.
