About the research

Sources & methodology

A clear line between what the data can tell you, what it cannot, and what you should verify for yourself.

Migration

State-to-state moves use U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey data (2024). These are statewide flows, not LA-to-city counts or a measure of why people moved. U-Haul’s Growth Index measures net one-way customers; it is a different indicator and not a count of families, homeowners or Californians.

Taxes and professional advice

LeavingLA is a general information site. It does not publish tax rates, tax estimates or tax guidance. Tax outcomes depend on your own situation, so always consult your CPA before making a decision.

Schools and third-party rankings

District comparisons preserve the source scope and edition noted on the school page. “Top five” is used only for cited statewide lists; other groups are geographic comparisons. A ranking never guarantees assignment or enrollment. Always check the official district for the exact address.

Living well as you age

AARP Livability Index records use the 2025 edition reviewed October 1, 2026 and the exact named city, town or census-designated place. An overall score averages seven categories; it is not an endorsement, satisfaction percentage or address-level result. LeavingLA is independent from AARP.

Care, housing and costs

Hospitals are research starting points, not promises of emergency coverage, specialist access, insurance acceptance, appointments or travel time. Local housing and waterfront claims require property-specific checks. No guessed valuation, numerical suitability score is published here.
